native-comedian-comedy-slamI had the opportunity on New Year’s Day to review the stand-up comedy special Going Native: American Indian Comedy Slam.

This stand-up comedy special filmed in January 2009 features Native American comedians Charlie Hill, Larry Omaha, Howie Miller, J. R. Redwater, Marc Yaffee, Jim Ruel and Vaughn Eaglebear.

I have to say from both a personal and professional stand point that Going Native: American Indian Comedy Slam was one of the best overall multi-performer stand-up comedy specials that I have seen in awhile.

I’m not just saying that because there are Killer Stand-up comedians featured in that show — I can be highly critical of stand-up comedy acts regardless of their fame or popularity.

But I can say this — Going Native: American Indian Comedy Slam was also one of the cleanest overall comedy shows I have seen, besides being hilarious. The content was 100% contemporary, tight and more than appropriate for virtually any audience.

In contrast, I reviewed Shaquille O’Neil’s latest stand-up comedy production and let me say this — I won’t be writing about it. With the exception of D. L. Hughley, all the rest of the comedians on that show were really trying hard to “force” funny to happen — with less than optimal results, especially for the size of the audience they were performing for.

But not so with the Going Native: American Indian Comedy Slam. Overall, the Native American comedians in that show offered a variety of performance styles and veiwpoints at a noteworthy performance level (that’s the PC terminology for they rocked).

All I can say is well done — very well done. I really hope you get the opportunity to check it out on the Showtime network.

And keep your eyeballs peeled — I suspect you will be seeing more of these funny and talented Native American comedians in the near future.

Cheers,
