Too Young For Stand-up Comedy? Meet Australian Comedian Sam Bowden
Having featured the widest possible range of stand-up comedy success stories evidenced by video of ANY stand-up comedy educator on the planet, I am now happy to introduce you to 16 year old Killer Stand-up Comedian Sam Bowden.
Sam attends Redeemer Lutheran College in Rochedale, suburb in Brisbane, Australia. In 2009—at the ripe old age of 15, Sam made the decision to become a stand-up comedian. He managed just 2 performances last year, age being an obvious barrier for performing opportunities.
Still, Sam was undeterred in his quest to become a stand-up comedian. He got his hands on the Stand-up Comedy Fast Start Guide in Nov 2009 and started working his material out in casual conversations, along with the help of a comedy workout partner.
In April 2010, comedian Sam Bowden won a secondary school competition called “Class Clowns” at the Brisbane Powerhouse in the Visy theatre. There were 17 contestants, 40 audience members and 3 judges. Here’s the video of that winning performance:
In this video, Sam generates a very respectable average of 13 seconds of laughter per minute (PAR Score 22) — not bad for the young man’s third performance on stage, at age 16!
Most open mic comedians who have been doing stand-up for awhile would give a finger to get as many laughs as Sam did during this winning set.
You should also notice that Sam commands great confidence on stage and is not intimidated in the slightest by the audience — a huge attribute for getting big laughs on stage.
There’s no doubt in my mind that once more performing opportunities are available, comedian Sam Bowden will be a very young “force to be reckoned with” in the world of Australian stand-up comedy.
Bravo!
Cheers,
Steve Roye
