Sometimes, a stand-up comedy act can be so powerful that it literally has an impact upon generations of stand-up comedians, their routines or the everyday language and references used by stand-up comedy fans.
I’m a sucker for stand-up comedy history–especially knowing what has happened “behind the scenes”. It’s just fascinating to me and one of the reasons I have recommended Betsy Borns book “Comic Lives” over and over again for years.
Well, in the process of interviewing Jordan Brady, the hilarious comedian turned movie director, I made an amazing discovery…

The term “success” has a different meaning to everyone and that includes success when it comes to stand-up comedy.
In my eyes, your stand-up comedy act or routine is a salable product—much like a television or a computer. The more craftsmanship, quality and dependability your stand-up comedy act represents, the more salable (and valuable) your stand-up comedy act is.
If the stand-up act you are trying to sell to an agent, comedy club manager, booker, corporation, etc. is the equivalent of an 8-track tape player, then you will have a difficult time selling that act for decent money, if any at all.

There are two events that always stand out among EVERY comedian who can slay an audience and that is…
Applause breaks and standing ovations. And for the record, applause is a recordable PAR Score event.
I was watching Comedy Central and caught the last part of one comedian’s act when it became blaringly apparent that this comedy star was getting more genuine and lasting applause breaks than I have ever seen in my life.

There’s a new reality TV show in the works featuring stand-up comedians working under pressure called “The Fast & the Funniest”. This new reality competition show is being developed by ABC.
If greenlighted, “Funniest” would debut on the network in late midseason or next summer. It joins ABC’s upcoming auto-competition series “Crash Course” and the Jamie Oliver weight-loss series among the network’s reality efforts in development.
The show follows a group of stand-up comedians as they travel cross-country competing in challenges and performances. The first three to reach the final destination will perform for a cash prize.

If you are going for the gusto with your comedy career and plan on moving to Los Angeles or New York…
There are some things you may want to consider—and plan for—before you make the move.
Let’s just assume that you are a headlining comedy club comedian in whatever area you currently reside. You might even be a local comedy celebrity of sorts.
