Comedian Bill Engvall And His Hit Sitcom On TBS
One of my all time favorite comedians Bill Engvall will be starting his 3rd season on TBS Saturday, July 18, 2009 (9pm ET/PT) on The Bill Engvall Show. It’s really incredible to watch one of my stand-up comedy heroes doing quite well on his own sitcom.
I hope you take the time to check it out because…
For those who don’t know, Bill Engvall was the very first headlining comedian that I ever saw perform live in San Diego in October 1992. It was at the long defunct Improv in Pacific Beach, just a couple of miles from where I lived in Navy housing there. I was thinner–and taller then.
After that performance, my ribs hurt for two days from laughing so hard. That’s how powerful Bill Engvall’s act was and lead to him untimately winning the coveted Stand-up Comedian of the Year award.
It was that single performance that set the “bar” for the level of stand-up comedy that I wanted to achieve on stage. I wanted to tell stories like Bill did, which would absolutely blow away the “joke telling” comedians who opened for him.
And I will actually go so far as to say that Bill Engvall was a major influence in my development of the Killer Stand-up Comedy System.
I like the show—period. But I am biased for reasons that I have already mentioned.
But here’s what I need from you which is….your honest opinion about the show. You can check out previous episodes online here. Use the comment box below and tell me what you think.
And don’t just say you like The Bill Engvall Show because I do—give me some real feedback, good or bad.
Your comments are appreciated as always.
Cheers,

Ok Steve,
Hang onto your hat. I found a comedy contest that allows the winner to open for Bill Engvall in Arizona at the Dodge Theater on August 3rd 2009. You have to submit a 4 minute video in a very specific video format. No fees. It is a contest sponsored by a company called MyStudio.net and the Michael Finney Foundation in Arizona. It looks to be a charity event.
Although the website indicates they want you to record your video at MyStudio.net location in Scottsdale, they will accept “Alternate Means of Entry” copied below.
I want to point out that My Studio.net is a website where people go to this actual kiosk studio in a shopping mall in Scottsdale and record their act on HD video – but get this – with NO audience! They want to roll this mall studio idea out across the country, but the only location is currently the one in Arizona.
They have been running their own contests over the past year where the person HAD to record the video submission only at the MyStudio.net location. The winner of the comedy competition then won a trip to New York to open for a comedian at the Gotham Comedy club (actually a legitimate, well known club). But tough to submit if you didn’t live in AZ, and to record some material with NO audience – not real conducive to picking a good comedian.
If you want to find videos to show your students how NOT to do stand-up, point them to the MyStudio.net website and peruse through the Comedy videos. Most are really bad. Actually, Steve you need to get your Killer system information in a kiosk right next to the mall studio!
Ok here are the instructions for submitting your own video for the Bill Engvall contest – note, must be in by July 31st!
“Alternate Means of Entry” – A video not recorded in a MyStudio recording studio can be entered by sending a DVD of the video to: MyStudio c/o Studio One Media, Inc, 7650 E. Evans Road, Suite C, Scottsdale, AZ 85260. Entrant must register as a MyStudio.net member. Registration is free. Entries must be received before contest end date to qualify. Entrant must send his/her MyStudio.net profile name, contest name, email address, birth date, full name, mailing address, and phone number. The DVD format must be Flash On2 VP6 (non-streaming, progressive download), 640 x 360 (16:9 aspect ratio), no greater than 700 kbps, and a total running time no greater than 4 minutes. Submitted DVD’s will not be returned.”
