Louis C.K.: Chewed Up

Writer-director-performer Louis C.K. brings his no-holds-barred standup comedy style to this cable special, proffering uncomfortable observations about his life as a guy, a husband, and a father.

Things start very well with a treatise on the proper use of the word “faggot,” which should never, according to C.K., be used as a derogatory term for gay men, but serves as a catch-all insult for everyone and everything else.

Also covered is the myth that drinking milk will replenish a man’s vital bodily fluids during marathon sex, a subject that somehow segues into C.K.’s ambiguous admission about the fate of any housecat foolish enough to watch him being intimate.

Less interesting is a diatribe about the comedian’s collision with a deer on the road, and an overlong bit about the frustrations of fatherhood, including fantasies of extreme tough love with small children. The best material arrives at the end, when wisdom seeps into C.K.’s epiphany about arriving at an  (more…)

The Best of Bill Cosby

Hands down one of the very best stand-up comedy story tellers ever is Bill Cosby. The comic genius of Bill Cosby transcends age, race, passing trends, and every other imaginable boundary line.

Anyone who has the first six Cosby standup records will have all of this material already covered, but The Best of Bill Cosby is nonetheless a pretty good introduction.

The choice of material reinforces the fact that in the early days Cosby was inventive and wasn’t content to roll around in the clichés of husband versus wife, instead telling wonderful stories from his childhood and making observations about the absurd aspects of everyday life.

Even after he started talking more about his family life on the later records, that storytelling aspect was key, always preferring to let the story flow rather than pulling out a string of cheap one-liners, and here he’s at his peak.

A prolific recording artist of dozens of spoken word/comic album tours de force, Cosby delivered many groundbreaking early titles that have never before been released on CD. Now four of these Cosby classics are combined with debut CD presentations to delight comedy fans everywhere!

A nine-times Grammy-winner and TV icon, his warm, personal, anecdotal humor radiates universal appeal and has profoundly influenced legions of stand-up artists and comedians who followed in his considerable wake.  (more…)

If there is one legend that I would love to endorse the Killer Stand-up Comedy System, it’s Bill Cosby. He embodies not only what the system is about but also exemplifies the level of laughter story telling comedians can achieve.
