comedic-timingThere are a lot of new comedians and speaking professionals who want to know how to develop comedy timing. Let me say this…

Your comedy “timing” improves in direct relation to your comfort on stage AND your ability to capture your own natural comedy timing.

That’s right — everyone has a natural sense of comedy timing and are unaware of it. Let me show you what I mean…

Read this long sentence out loud:

That folks, is the foundation of your comedy timing — saying what you have to say on stage in your own natural voice using your own natural breath pauses. This is your rhythm, which is usually between 9-15 syllables spoken in between between natural breath pauses (this applies to longer sentences you speak obviously).

When we comminicate with others verbally, each of  us has a natural rhythm and speed that we speak at.

This is one of the reason that you want to “write” your stand-up comedy the way you actually talk, not the way it would be “read”. Each line of your act should be written out separated by breath pauses, NOT punctuation on the page!

This is how you capture your natural sense of comedy timing for the stage. Then if you apply the 3 line rule from the Killer Stand-up Comedy System

You should have a pretty tight act and have it on paper in the format of your own natural timing.

There’s a bit more to learn about comedy timing, but this should give you a great start.

Cheers,
