87243720There are a number of very good reasons why you should consider attending a comedy workshop or comedy class, especially at the beginning of your comedy career.

And one of those reasons is NOT to make you funnier. If you have read my work before, then you know that you bring funny to the table—you don’t somehow become magically funny.

But a comedy workshop or comedy class can give you some things that you just can’t get anywhere else, specifically stage time and peer review depending on the class or workshop you attend.

Here’s a brief laundry list of how you can benefit from taking a comedy class or comedy workshop (depending on the curriculum of course):

1. You get to network with others who are aspiring to become comedians as well. This is probably one of the biggest benefits because you can find “comedy buddies” to develop comedy material with and you can find out from these folks where the gigs for newbies are located in your area.

2. You get stage time. While much of that stage time will usually be in front of other students, this stage time is still extremely valuable.

Many comedy classes and comedy workshops are tied in with an open mic night in which the students get to perform at the end.

You can also get feedback on your comedy material.

3. You can get a good feel for the business from the inside, instead of from an audience member’s perspective.

4. You can learn the “lingo” of comedy, as well as the performance structure and how it is implemented.

5. You have a resource to ask questions and get those questions answered (that’s a big deal).

As far as the “getting funnier” part…

There’s not a comedy class or comedy workshop on the planet that can make someone “funny” hwo isn’t funny already. My own system for helping others develop stand-up comedy material makes no claim that someone will become magically funny because they use my system.

But I will say this…

If you have devoured the Killer Stand-up Comedy System before you attend a comedy class or comedy workshop, I’m going to go out on a limb and say…

You will have a serious advantage over others when it comes to developing comedy material that actually gets laughs.

So, my advice is this…

If you have the chance to take a comedy workshop or comedy class — go for it! They are usually fairly inexpensive for what you get. And whatever you do…

Don’t tell anyone you are using my system. Let ‘em think you are a “natural” when you get there.

Cheers,
