More About The Jim Gaffigan Article
In my post about Jim Gaffigan, it appears that some folks missed what I was trying to convey in providing that post and the video of Jim to review.
It’s really doesn’t matter if you personally like Jim Gaffigan’s delivery style or stand-up comedy material. It doesn’t matter if you think he’s funny or boring.
What I DO want you to pay attention to is the number and duration of laughs he is able to achieve in the live performing environment, even though he is a low energy comedian.
And if you measure him against other top level comedians using that criteria alone, you will find that he ranks among the top, no matter what “energy level” is being used.
I am specifically referring to using a tool like Comedy Evaluator Pro as the evaluation tool when trying to make an objective comparison about comedians and their effectiveness on stage.
Bill Bailey is another example of a “low energy” comedian who gets frequent laughs in a very low key, yet effective way.
But it doesn’t matter what comedy “style” you use. What does matter when it comes to getting the big laughs from the comedy stage is your delivery.
Your delivery and your commitment to your material will get you more laughs than great “comedy writing” ever will.
This is why I am so adamant about comedians being themselves on stage. If you are a naturally funny person in everyday life…
Then you are already a unique “character”. You already have a unique “style” that works for you when generating laughs from casual conversations. You already use stand-up comedy techniques and don’t even realize it.
In other words…
You DON’T have to develop a special “character” or persona in order to kill on the comedy stage.
If you DO want to develop a special character or persona for the stand-up comedy stage, I would highly recommend that you take acting classes.
In my opinion:
Great actors are masters at becoming someone else. Great comedians are masters at being themselves.

“Great actors are masters at becoming someone else. Great comedians are masters at being themselves.”
Wonderful quote. I’d even go so far as to replace ‘being’ with ‘becoming’, especially for younger comedians.
