Killer Stand-up Comedian Travon Free Wins Uncle Clyde Comedy Contest
For those of you who have never heard of Uncle Clyde’s Comedy Contest, it is the longest running stand-up comedy competition in the LA area (since 1997). It is held the Ice House comedy club in Pasadena and every week, 10 comedians compete for some cool prizes like:
>> $500 cash prize
>> A week long pro gig in the Ice House Main Room
>> Automatic entry into a Comedy festival
And the winner of the competition finals held on August 20, 2009 was 24 year old comedian Travon Free, a Killer Stand-up Comedy System comedian.
From talking with Travon who has been performing stand-up for just 3 years, no one in the final round of the competition was even close to his comedy set (there are 6 qualifying rounds with 10 comedians competing each round to get to the finals).
Here’s is the video of comedian Travon Free’s winning set from the Ice House comedy club:
I measured this set at a 30 PAR Score (which I consider the minimum PAR Score for a headlining comedian).
One thing that I know for sure is that Travon’s comedy material will be producing 40+ PAR Scores before you know it.
Travon Free is a full-time actor/comedian. He got involved in stand-up comedy in college in 2006 when he tore ligaments in his knee and had to sit out of basketball for a year and a half.
He always wanted to be a comedy writer, but was prompted by his comedy writing teacher Brian Alan Lane (writer for Remington Steele, Star Trek) to try his hand at stand-up comedy. Travon had a great first time on the stand-up comedy stage and never looked back.
His dreams and goals: To become one of the biggest power houses in comedy and acting, become the first black host of the Tonight Show, and to start his own foundation for helping the less fortunate in America especially when it comes to the arts.
There is no doubt in my mind that Trevon Free has what it takes to become a big comedy star. Keep rockin’ the house!
Cheers,
