So how does a comedian go from no stage time to a Showtime comedy special in 5 years without performing in comedy clubs?
Well, if you ask comedian J.R. Redwater, one of the rising comedy stars in the upcoming Showtime presentation American Indian Comedy Slam in November 2009…
J.R. will tell you without hesitation that his success is largely due to the Killer Stand-up Comedy System. And his story is no less than inspirational.

In 1992, comedian Bill Engvall was awarded Best Male Standup at the American Comedy Awards, and moved into sitcom TV with an appearance on Designing Women and a regular role on the short-lived spin-off Delta.
One of Bill’s signature stand-up comedy routines involves why some people need a sign right on the front of their shirt to identify them as stupid or not.
In Bill’s book Here’s Your Sign, you will find more than 200 of Bill Engvall’s favorite Here’s Your Sign jokes and anecdotes. This book also contains Bill’s funniest product warnings such as the fan-belt package that says, “stop motor before applying the product”, and a few of his best stories.

For those of you who have never heard of Uncle Clyde’s Comedy Contest, it is the longest running stand-up comedy competition in the LA area (since 1997). It is held the Ice House comedy club in Pasadena and every week, 10 comedians compete for some cool prizes like:
>> $500 cash prize >> A week long pro gig in the Ice House Main Room >> Automatic entry into a Comedy festival
And the winner of the competition finals held on August 20, 2009 was 24 year old comedian Travon Free, a Killer Stand-up Comedy System comedian.

I know that there are many people who are under the impression that because of the reference to a stand-up comedy “act” that stand-up comedy is acting.
There are even stand-up comedy teachers who try to teach perspective comedians how to “act” their way towards a funny stand-up comedy routine.
In my professional opinion, stand-up comedy is a completely different art form than acting. Yet there are some similarities.
