Are you looking into taking a comedy workshop? If so, here’s what you need to know…

While comedy workshops may be good for the extreme newbie to get some very basic information about stand-up comedy and the comedy club scene, don’t expect to be able to produce and deliver headliner level any time soon as a result of a comedy workshop.

Here’s why I can say that, having attended several comedy workshops myself early in my comedy career (which haven’t changed in decades):

1. Most comedy workshops still teach the old school and highly difficult “set-up/punchline” joke writing approach to developing stand-up comedy for the stage.

87243720There are a number of very good reasons why you should consider attending a comedy workshop or comedy class, especially at the beginning of your comedy career.

And one of those reasons is NOT to make you funnier. If you have read my work before, then you know that you bring funny to the table—you don’t somehow become magically funny.

But a comedy workshop or comedy class can give you some things that you just can’t get anywhere else, specifically stage time and peer review depending on the class or workshop you attend.

People say you’re funny. You’re always making people laugh. It’s something you enjoy doing and when people laugh it is the ultimate reward. You fell like you understand comedy, and now you want to take it to the next level by becoming a professional comedian.

But, being a stand-up comic and comedian is a lot different than making a joke and waiting for your friends to laugh. With comedy, you need to be conscious about the audience, learn about stage presence, and write jokes that have a universal appeal.

Yes, you need to develop comedy material that has universal appeal.  But you don’t have to “write” one single joke.
