If your goal is to become a headlining comedian, you need to think and perform like a headliner BEFORE you officially reach that coveted position in the world of stand-up comedy.
While that may be a difficult concept for some to grasp, I will tell you this:
If you are consistently getting an average of 18 or more seconds of laughter for each minute you perform—no matter what position in a comedy show line-up you may be in or how new you may be to stand-up comedy—you are performing at headliner level.

I’m a firm believer that very few comedians actually ever experience a “big break” — it’s really more like getting some smaller breaks that become significant over time.
As I reflect on my own stand-up comedy career, there are a couple of events that stick out like a sore thumb and certainly helped me along the way. I would call these my “big breaks” if they qualify as such.
But before I tell you what they are, please note: I was ready to open the door when opportunity knocked. Many comedians are not.
My first “big break” was when I won a local military comedy competition in 1993 held at Camp Pendleton in Oceanside, CA. Only two of the contestants had every even been on a comedy stage before the competition—myself and Sharyn Cartier, another Navy Chief. Read the rest of this entry
