I get really amused by what I can only describe as the “television intelligence” and “that’s the way it’s always been done” approach that permeates society when it comes to developing stand-up comedy material that actually works for the stage.

Ooops! Pardon me—I was supposed to say “write” stand-up comedy. That’s how it’s done, right? All you have to do is “write” jokes that read funny on paper using any number of established “joke formulas”, right? It’s really just a matter of “plug-n-play”, isn’t it?

I have said for years that comedians need to be “small audience specialists”. Why?

Usually, comedians must prove their ability in front of smaller audiences before they are given the opportunity to perform for larger audiences.

So, common sense would dictate that comedians should become very skilled at slaying small audiences on a consistent basis. But that’s usually not the case. Here’s what happens…
