I mentioned in my newsletter that I was going to be filmed as a part of a documentary on stand-up comedy.
Well, it happened on Sep 16, 2009 at Uber Content, Jordan Brady’s production company right on the Hollywood Center Studios lot in Los Angeles.
Of course, one never knows how much time they will actually get in the final version, if any at all. My part in this documentary filming focused on Comedy Evaluator Pro.
The filming occurred in the Uber Content conference room. As soon as I got there and got my computer set-up, I slapped on a mic and the camera was rolling (Jordan Brady is the Director). I was told beforehand that another comedian would be showing up soon and that I would get a real kick out of it.
First, Ritch Shyner asked a number of questions about my own comedy career. Next we jumped right into questions about Comedy Evaluator Pro.
Jordan Brady had already selected 5-6 stand-up comedy clips that I was to evaluate for PAR Score (Positive Audience Response). The video clip was of comedian Tommy Davidson’s performance during Shaq & Cedric the Entertainer’s All Star Comedy Jam.
I only did an evaluation of the first 2 minutes of Tommy Davidson’s performance. His PAR Score was 40, which is smoking hot for the first two minutes of ANY stand-up comedy act.
As I finished the evaluation, Tommy Davidson walked into the room. I got to meet with Tommy briefly before he got filmed for his part in the documentary.
Tommy said that Dom Irrera told him one time that unlike most comedians’ comedy acts that build momentum over the course of their show, Tommy would “peak” very quickly and maintain it at a high level from there.
Well, that’s what my Comedy Evaluator Pro software indicated to me.
One of the questions that came up during the filming concerned “star power” and it’s effect on the PAR Score a comedian will receive during an evaluation.
Star power—audience recognition—does affect the frequency and intensity of laughter that a comedian can command on stage. Which brings me to the next video I evaluated which was…
Comedian Jeff Foxworthy in comedy club performance before he was a household name. The segment I evaluated was from the beginning of his set and after about 3 minutes, the evaluation was stopped.
Jeff had a solid 33 PAR Score for my evaluation, which is of course headliner level and excellent for the beginning of any stand-up comedy set. Had I evaluated more of that set, I suspect Jeff ’s PAR Score would have been closer to 40 when all was said and done.
I evaluated several other comedian acts too, in different audience sizes and in different comedy venues.
While I was being filmed I had a great time. Jordan Brady and Ritch Shydner were fun to work with and they really treated me like a celebrity.
Like I said before, I have no idea of what my actual part in this documentary will be when all is said and done. But from what I understand…
It will be completed for film festival viewing at the beginning of next year. And of course, I will let you know what happens!
