  1. I hope to set myself apart from the pack. I live in Denver, and Peyton Manning is the perfect example of talent meshing with determination and hard work.

A lot of people have natural talent and feel they don’t have to work as hard as the untalented guys. Big misconception.

Like you mentioned about studying for a test, If you know you are well prepared, the test is a breeze and doesn’t cause stress. If you didn’t study, you try to rationalize why it doesn’t matter or adopt that, “I’ll get’em next time!” attitude.

Jim Rome says it best, “Be prepared, have something intelligent to say, and don’t suck!”

  2. Practice, practice, practice. The more I watch myself in my practice videos, the more I realize I’m not ready for a flawless performance. I tend to read my material instead of letting it flow like a natural conversation.

I believe this is what you mean by “mechanical.” I am devoting the next several days to working one 7 minute set instead of acting like I’m doing a movie.

Kill the small stuff, then move on to bigger game, because if you can’t kill for 5-10 minutes, what the heck makes me think I can do over an hour and kill?

False perception on my part. Get a 7-minute set perfected, then perfect another and another until I can string several bits together to make a 30 minute performance.

I just have to remember, if the 1st set bombs, I won’t be asked about my 2nd or 3rd sets! I’ll just be another open-mic’er that seems like an unprofessional amateur.

  3. I feel like a pest or an idiot because I keep asking questions directly, and then I fing a blog page with the answers.

This page in particular I’m going to call my 5 commandments. I will try to seperate myself from my very 1st open mic.

If I’m 1/10th as good as I believe in my heart, this should be almost instantanious. I’m used to succeeding faster than what people expect, and I will strive to prove you CAN become a headliner almost overnight.
