So what you’re saying is… To write character comedy (where the character is yourself), you just write about yourself. Wow, so comedy is really like a diary. I can see why hacks and joke thiefs fail so much, they’re trying to use someone else’s personality. George Carlin’s material is exclusive to George Carlin, Jerry Seinfield’s is exclusive to Jerry Seinfield, and so on…
I generally try out my material on Friends , dates I go on without mentioning that it is a stand up material.
that’s what I do. But I think you’ll get more useful responses if you tell your friends it’s stand up material. Try it.
Then you go for it. Just don’t be shocked when your friends look at you like you have a horn growing out of your head when you try to do stand-up comedy material that you told them you are doing in advance…
Some people can be excellent joke writers, like sitcom writers. Once the writer knows a character well they can truly ingenious stuff! Generic jokes can alwell be used in a different way. They would do very well in a joke book. So both type of writes can have their place if they believe in their way of writing.
