Great insight. I can tell, when I write material, if I’m struggling because I’m trying to make the reading experience funny. And comedy is performed, not read. Also, I was SO surprised to see how much time he got from such a small amount of written material. I think many ‘comedians’ miss the performance part of the act.
I’m planning on doing my first 5 minutes in the next couple weeks and as I’ve already written out my jokes and am just organizing and polishing.. I was wondering what you mean by “old school” way of writing jokes…
Remember in school how regardless of the subject matter, there was this guys theory or that guys theory?? Well, the same can be said for comedy. Everyone has their own approach and their own gameplan, if you will. I personally am the type who will wait on line at a house show after a performance, not for the picture or the autograph, but to be able to ask a question. Typically that question is as follows. “What is the best advice you can give someone who is starting from the ground level?” My answers are often different. Some of the more memorable.. ” No matter how funny YOU think a kne in a bit is, if you try it three times and don’t get laughs, abandon it. Every second counts” Jim Breuer.
” Try to stay away from stuff that is dated or only works in certain regions. The more vast an audience you can appeal to, the more opportunities you will get ” Kevin Dillon.
” in the beginning there are times that will seem like a nightmare but a nightmare is still a dream. Even when it seems impossible keep chasing your dream.” Eddie Griffin.
Three different pieces of good advice. From three successful people. Point is no one piece of advice can sum it all up and that what’s best for one may not be what’s best for another.
