  1. Those are definitely two big misconceptions. Why would people think they can make an audience laugh on stage if they aren’t making people laugh off stage? (That doesn’t mean you need to have people in stitches all day long, but you probably should be causing people to laugh at least sometime…on a fairly regular basis.) And the joke writing misconception is pretty crazy too, but at least on paper it makes more sense than #1. But after taking Steve’s five free lessons, I could definitely see how absurd #2 was too. During the day, when you are making people laugh, most likely, those were not jokes you wrote down on paper. They just were you reacting to something someone said or something that happened, something absurd you observed, or …, etc.

  2. Great spirit, Foghorn! Open and honest. You’ve said it well: – “That’s why I’m here, to learn not to suck…and stay in the ring.” Hopefully that’s what’ motivating us all! Thanks

  3. This is definitely something I am constantly working on. As a pastor, I can take a few minutes to set people up for the points I am trying to make. In stand-up, I don’t have that much freedom. Though I am sure, my congregation, doesn’t mind me working on less words to make my points! (There are lots of jokes about long-winded preachers.) As I continue to make progress, both my sermons and my stand-up will greatly benefit! 🙂

    • Interesting, Larry – “both my sermons and my stand-up will greatly benefit!” Since working through the articles and comments on this site, I’m finding that I’m tightening setups, editing punchlines, working on act-outs … In my everyday conversations! As I’ve said in other comments, I keep the mindset that every conversation and all our interactions are potential practice and rehearsal.
