This article was right on point. When you are new it is hard to differentiate between adrenaline and nervousness. You have the both of them going at you, so you don’t pause for a punchline. You just try to get through the routine without making any mistakes.
Thanks,
Last night I did two open mics, I did one joke that involved me cheer-leading (BE AGGRESSIVE, BE..BE..AGGRESSIVE) as the punch, and the tag is that I can’t spell it out and blame my public schools, it got adequate laughs. One of the other comics pointed out that while I’m trying to spell aggressive, my facial expression doesn’t show confusion or frustration and as a result the joke loses momentum. So at the second open mic, I made sure to nail the facial expression and really sell it, it when over better than the first. I video recorded both and the tape doesn’t lie.
Is this something you have done or are currently doing?
Is it worthwhile? It seems to me that there is more money in marketing your soul over time through books or printed venues.
As always, it’s probably all timing and delivery
Yes, this is something I have done in the past and yes it is worthwhile if one can accumulate the credibility needed to be taken seriously as a comedy writer.
