Glad I read this. I am been trying my material in front of a mirror the last couple days as I have been gathering the courage to try an open mic for the first time. However my body language and my voice is different and like you said I am finding I am trying to sell myself to the mirror.
I am going to stop doing it.
So thanks
An interesting post. Will get the stopwatch out!
If the average is 18+ seconds of laughter per minute.
Does that count the average of minutes in a 5 minute set?
What I mean is can you hypothetically get 36 seconds in the 2nd minute and none in the 1st as an example?
It doesn’t matter how long the set is – the average of 18+ seconds of laughter is a headliner level set.
Usually (not always), the minute in which a new bit is started doesn’t get as many laughs in that minute as in the later minutes of a tight bit.
And I can promise you this – if you get no laughs in the first minute, you are going to have a very hard time getting 18 seconds of laughter in the next minute, much less 36 seconds of laughter. But hypothetically it is possible. If you take a look at a comedian like Bob Newhart – he would spend 30-45 seconds setting up a bit (which is a LONG time). But after that, it was one set-up and punchline after the other.
Keep in mind that Comedy Evaluator Pro is a performance improvement tool – a gauge for which there are also a number of audience factors that can impact a comedian’s laughter generation ability which should be considered as well (size, seating, etc.).
